Branch Network Cutover and Rollback Planning

A branch refresh affects users, phones, wireless, printers, security devices, payment systems and business applications. The cutover method should protect operations, not merely replace hardware.

A successful cutover starts before the maintenance window

Discovery, configuration review, staging, backups, labeling and remote access should be complete before production traffic is moved.

Discovery and dependency mapping

Inventory WAN circuits, modems, firewalls, routers, switches, access points, controllers, UPS equipment, patch panels and connected devices. Capture model, serial, management status, interfaces, VLANs, trunks, routing, DHCP, DNS, VPNs, PoE loads and port descriptions. Photographs should show both equipment and cabling clearly.

Map services that may not be owned by IT: cameras, access control, intrusion communicators, phones, paging, point of sale, building automation and vendor appliances. Identify static addressing, port security, multicast, QoS and firewall dependencies before moving cables.

Staging and pre-cutover testing

Claim cloud-managed devices, assign licenses, load approved firmware, apply templates or configurations and verify management reachability. Confirm optics, transceivers, cables, rack hardware, power cords and console access. Pre-label ports and patch cords to reduce decisions during the outage.

Review the target configuration against the discovered state. Test duplicate IP risk, VLAN and trunk definitions, DHCP relay, VPN peers, routing, security policy, wireless SSIDs and authentication dependencies. A peer review can catch errors that are difficult to diagnose under time pressure.

Maintenance window and rollback control

The method of procedure should list each physical and logical step, expected duration, validation checkpoint and owner. Record the latest time at which rollback can begin and still restore service within the approved window. Keep old equipment powered and intact until the target is stable whenever practical.

Rollback criteria should be objective: inability to establish WAN, critical application failure, unacceptable voice or payment behavior, loss of management or insufficient time for safe troubleshooting. The decision maker must be reachable and authorized to stop the change.

Validation and handoff

Validate WAN reachability, VPNs, routing, DNS, DHCP, wired and wireless clients, voice, printing, critical applications and dependent devices. Check switch errors, PoE delivery, access-point status, SD-WAN path health and monitoring alerts. Use representative site users or application owners where possible.

Update diagrams, port schedules, asset records and support documentation. Record removed equipment and its disposition. The closeout should distinguish successful tests from items not tested and list every residual exception with an owner.

Is an Internet speed test enough validation?

No. Test WAN, VPN, DNS, DHCP, wired, wireless, voice, critical applications and dependent operational systems.

Should old hardware be removed immediately?

Keep it recoverable until the target is stable when space, power and the approved method allow.

Why label patch cords before cutover?

Pre-labeling reduces errors and decision time, especially where old port descriptions or cable routes are unclear.

Manufacturer software, firmware and technical files remain on the manufacturer’s official website. We do not mirror firmware files locally.
